It’s no secret that Mississippi educators are underpaid. It’s also not a secret that we are in the midst of a teacher shortage crisis.
These facts are directly related. How do we convince young educators to stay here in Mississippi and teach when they can move just across state lines and make a livable wage? How do we retain veteran educators who have second and third jobs so they can make ends meet?
Unfortunately, it’s not just low wages that contribute to this crisis. A lack of contract security, consistently underfunded public schools, and over-testing make choosing a career in education a hard decision.
State leadership keeps telling us that public education in Mississippi has never been stronger.
Well, the numbers don’t lie.
Hold your elected officials accountable. Tell them we deserve more than election year pandering. Demand more for our educators.
