THE START OF A HOPEFUL NEW YEAR
— A NOTE FROM PRESIDENT HELMICK
Dear Fellow Educators,
This week begins a brand-new chapter in the lives of students, teachers, administrators and parents as we kick off the 2018-2019 school year. There is just nothing like the eager anticipation that comes with the start of a new year. For us, it’s a chance for us to get it right, one more time. After all, we’re engaged in the grandest of all professions – shaping young minds to be productive, contributing, and principled citizens.
As educators, we have spent a good part of the summer preparing to make these first few weeks an extra-special time in our students’ lives. It is work well worth the effort as we watch our plans unfold and bloom.
We can see the excitement and joy in young faces as they are reunited with their friends and school family. They are confident and proud. It lifts our own hearts to watch them.
In others, we can see anxiety and apprehension as they enter new halls populated by strange faces. Their eyes tug at us to help them, and we do.
Some are shadowed by the rigors of trying to exist in a realm of dysfunction at home. For these, school is their refuge – a place where they can leave those cares at the doorstep and strive to achieve their very best. We know we can offer them sanctuary.
Perhaps our most heart-wrenching challenge is to “love the unlovable” – those who act up and act out. These are often the ones who most need us to be calm, accepting, and kind. As professional educators, we rise to that special challenge.
Your MAE family celebrates this special week with each and every one of you. We can’t wait to see the pictures, hear the stories, and celebrate your successes!
Here’s to a great start for a momentous year!
