Legislative Update | February 3-7, 2020
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE |Things are moving quickly here at the Capitol as the deadline for submitting legislation approaches. We’ve got our eye on a number of education bills and will keep a close watch on them as they move through the legislative process. You can see the current list of education bills filed to the House and Senate education committees here and here.
TEACHER PAY RAISE BILL | The Senate’s teacher pay raise bill, SB 2001, was passed out of the appropriations committee on Tuesday and was passed unanimously by the full Senate on Wednesday morning. It heads to the House next.
SB 2001 will:
- Raise starting teachers’ salaries to $37,000,
- Raise starting pay for teacher assistants to $15,000, and
- Increase all teachers’ and teacher assistants’ salaries by $1,000.
We believe SB 2001 is an important step in the right direction. We made it clear that it was imperative educators see a show of good faith from state leaders and legislators early this session—both in the form of the immediate pay raise that many elected officials campaigned on, and in the promise of a long-term plan that will help us reach and eventually exceed the current Southeastern average.
We are grateful for the leadership of Lt. Gov. Hosemann, education committee Chairman DeBar and Vice Chairman Blount, and look forward to working with their counterparts in the House and colleagues in both chambers to get a meaningful teacher pay raise bill passed.
