School Funding Rewrite Threatens in Senate — HB957

February 21, 2018

Senators gathered in Room 216 of the Capitol this afternoon for a discussion on House Bill 957, the proposed public school funding rewrite. Education Committee Chair Gray Tollison provided an opportunity for review and discussion of the measure that has created alarm across the public school community due to its impending reductions in mandated funding. Committee members may be voting on this as early as Monday, February 26. Tuesday is the deadline for the full Senate to vote the measure up or down.

We provide THIS CHART of comparison of potential school district appropriations generated by the proposed funding formula as opposed to what MAEP, if fully funded, would provide to the districts. Each public school district in Mississippi will lose funding under this scenario.

During today’s committee meeting, one Senator sagely noted that the new formula was not guaranteed to be funded any more than the MAEP had been — only twice during its 20 year existence.

MAE OPPOSES HB 957, and is asking members and all public school supporters to contact Senators and ask them to vote NO on this measure.

There’s no time like the present to make a call in opposition to HB957.
